Our Little Free Library.

It is finished!  Phew.  I think in the end, we all chipped in to make our new library a reality.  The girls came up with this idea several months ago.  Kevin made them write a letter to the homeowner's association asking for permission.  They also had to go talk to our neighbors that border our yard.  The HOA came back with a few additional questions, but before too long the project was a GO.

The library is now filled with books.  We have already had a few exchanges.  When the girls get back from my parents, they made fliers to pass around the neighborhood announcing the new Little Free Library.

A Welcome Note of Encouragement.

Several years ago, Kevin helped the girls build a Little Free Library  We have had a lot of fun scouring yard sales and passing along books of our own to the neighborhood.  I have noticed that our neighborhood has a 'book personality'.  I can tell, before I add a book, whether it will go very fast.  Sadly, I am the only person that seems to like suspense and spy novels.  Tonight Sidney went to our front porch to find this sweet little note on our door.  The fact that this sweet little girl took a moment to let us know that she has been receiving joy from our project is icing on the cake!

Hanging On.

Reader beware...this post may be raw.  The past six weeks have been incredibly difficult for Kevin and I.  We try to put on a happy face.  We try to focus on the positive.  We try to keep some semblance of normal for our daughters.  We try not to burden others with our woes.  However, we are human and sometimes it is just too much.  We are blessed in so many ways.  We are fortunate to have more time than we originally imagined.  But, we are still living through a very tough battle.

The new treatment is awesome in so many ways.  Yet, there are so many unknowns with it.  The chemotherapy was awful, but the side affects were predictable.  A majority of the past six weeks, Kevin has been unable to walk without high doses of pain medication.  Both of his knees and his ankles have been swollen, sometimes to the extent that he cannot even bend and straighten them.  They tested him for gout or infection, both came back negative.  They took x-rays.  They did additional scans to be sure the cancer had not taken on a new life of its own.  They have had him ice and elevate.  They have sent him to physical therapy.  Each of these resulting in little to no sign of improvement. In the end, he is back on prednisone.  They tried other medications, but each time they would taper him off, the pain and swelling would come back with a vengeance.  For now, we believe it may be some type of rheumatoid arthritis that has been onset by his treatments.  So...he has had to forego some treatments.

For everything that Kevin has been through, he has never complained.  These past six weeks have taken their toll  He has hit a wall.  He hurts.  He is tired of hurting.  He is frustrated.  He cannot do the simple things in life.  He cannot tuck his daughters in bed at night.  Walking to the restroom or getting a glass of water have become monumental.  He wants to make a Little Free Library with the girls.  However, this one day project has taken weeks, because he just doesn't feel well.  He had to sit back and watch as his wife and daughters hauled furniture in and out of the house for the floors to be done.  He watches me do the daily tasks that he once called chores, wishing he could get up and help, but knowing that he cannot.

I try to be strong.  I try to hold it together.  I am tired of watching the man I love hurt so badly.  I am just plain tired.  We all have our Achilles heel.  My Achilles heel is the way in which I handle intensely stressful situations.  When I am hurting or overwhelmed, I get angry and hold people at a distance.  I know this about myself.  I have fought each and every day the past 2-1/2 years to overcome this demon.  Lately, I have not had the strength.

I do not write these things for pity.  I write these things, because it is good to get them out.  We will carry on.  We will continue to cling to what is good and to fight for each new day.  We will continue to do the things that bring us together as a family.  We ask for your continued prayers as we walk this journey.

June Summer Fun

We are still here. The summer has started out packed full of fun. The kids spent a week with their grandparents while Kevin and I worked and then enjoyed a "kid free" mini-vacation. The week flew by. We picked the kids up from my parents house and were able to watch one of Dylan's baseball games. He is such a little super star. He made the all-star team this year and has been spending a lot of time at practice. As usual, it was very hard to leave my parents and come home. We love our home and love Boise, but spending time with our families is always so much fun. I am happy to report that the goatie has left the building. As sexy as it looked (close your ears mom), I am glad to see that "spikey" thing go (as Kendall so eloquently put it).
While we were visiting my parents we took a trip to see Kevin's sister and her family. They just bought a new house, so we were excited to check it out. Kami had saved a few of her special toys to pass down to the girls. Sidney especially like the little ponies.
Kevin is off for the summer (can you hear the jealousy in my words)? He is having so much fun with the girls. They have been attending the library programs and spending endless hours at the park and in the backyard pool (wading pool that is).
We have gotten pretty involved in the summer reading program with the girls. They just reached their first level and redeemed their slips for prizes. They got candy, tickets to the Snake River Stampede Rodeo and goldfish. Yes, real live goldfish. Kevin and I were laughing, because they got free goldfish and we spent $10 buying the supplies. It has been fun watching the girls get so excited over feeding their fish every night. Kendall has changed their names at least five times. Kevin finally put his foot down and said they would be "Goldy" and "Fish". Why ruin a good thing, after all Kendall's giraffe is "giraffe", monkey is "monkey, and we have "cat" and "cat in the hat".
Sid is really starting to jabber away. The other day she actually spoke her first complete sentence "More banana please mommy". I could not believe my ears and actually asked her to repeat herself. Sure enough that is what she had said. She is our little athlete. If there is a ball within 10 yards of her, she will find it, throw it and kick it. She continues to amaze us with her accuracy. She has also been showing off her profound running skills. Unfortunately this also includes running away from mom and dad in parking lots. No good I say!

Camping season has officially begun in the Strong household. Last weekend we went to my absolute favorite spot. I am not sure I can mention the name for fear that it will be overcrowded by all of the people who see the gorgeous pictures below...

The girls are such good campers. It has gotten so much easier now that they are getting a little older (if one can call an "almost" 2 and 3 year old "older"). The only gear that we have to pack are clothes, diapers and wipes. No more Pack and Play, formula, booster seats or special gadgets. It is sweet! We stocked up on glow sticks from the dollar store and gave the girls one each night while we were camping. They were in heaven. It was their own personal night light. Kevin took Sidney out on her first solo fishing trip while Kendall got her beauty sleep. They were gone for nearly 3 hours. Kevin said she is a great little fisherman. I asked how many fish they caught and he said "None, but she is still a great fishermen". Hmm??? Apparently she had a good time as she returned with only half the bag of marshmallows!

Happenings at 7204.

My parents neighbor hung a beautiful sign on his garage with his house number.  I remarked to my parents how awesome it was.  So, when they wanted to thank me for helping with the patio roof and shed, they surprised me with this awesome house sign.  When they asked their neighbor where he had purchased it, it turns out that his sister had made it for him.  He told my mom that he would make me one.  I love it!

Our little free library has gotten a lot of activity this spring.  The girls and I have been frantically reloading it with books to keep the neighborhood reading.  Even the birds have been enjoying it!

My mom, Sid and I venture out to Old Navy for summer shopping.

Sidney and I scored these cute matching t-shirts.  We scored such great finds, that I was 'forced' to take Kendall out for a shopping trip as well.  Shucks!

I am not sure that I want to even post this picture, because Kendall looks way too old and way too gorgeous, but here it is.  She went to the Aveda Institute and had her hair cut and styled.  My neighbor saw me out on the scooter and mentioned that if I needed any help cleaning the shotgun, he would be happy to assist.  I think I may  need to take him up on that offer.
