Holy Spearmint Batman!

I dedicate the title of this post to The Dark Knight Rises.  I am easily amused when it comes to film watching.  Last weekend while Kevin and I were getting ready for AshLee and Patrick's wedding, we caught a few minutes of this movie on the hotel TV.  We reserved it on our drive home and watched it that evening.  So, I am in a Batman and Robin mode now.  Seriously though, check out my spearmint plant.  I am so glad that I heeded the many warnings of family and friends and put this in a pot.  It is beautiful (and has already received several haircuts)!

We are plant sitting for Terrell while she is enjoying one of the benefits of her job as a "granny".  She is taking July to relax and visit with family.  We brought her pots to our house to care for them during the July heat.  Kendall and I deadheaded these pots a few nights ago and filled a grocery bag.  They are ready for more blooms!

I have never been much of a tomato fan.  In fact, we were shocked a few years ago to learn that Kendall loved cherry tomatoes as we never have them around the house.  Then we started our fruit and veggie co-op.  I was receiving tomatoes nearly every week.  I finally said to Terrell, "What in the world can I do with these nasty things?"  She told me to throw them in my spaghetti sauce (a dish we have nearly once every week) with jarred sauce of course.  They were amazing!  I have concluded that I just do not like raw tomatoes.  The other day I actually went to the store and purchased tomatoes.  Unbelievable!  We decided to pick up a Roma tomato plant for our patio.  We were a little late in the game, but we are already seeing some tiny tomatoes.

And how is the rest of our garden doing?  I must start by saying that we were a little overzealous and planted our garden a bit early.  The late frost zapped it.  I was almost too cheap to replant.  With a little coaxing from Kevin (and a sale on starters at Fred Meyer), we replanted.  Things are starting to grow.  It is exciting to watch.

A sweet pepper.

Zucchini (thank goodness we only planted one of these).

Our cauliflower, cantaloupe and spaghetti squash plants are also coming right along.  The flowers that Kendall and I planted outside our bedroom window are really taking off.

On the way home from the wedding last weekend, we stopped in West Yellowstone and let the girls run around for awhile.  They love picking the wildflowers.  I love watching them pick the wildflowers.  It reminds me of when my sister and I were little.  My Aunt Nena would always take us on walks to pick wildflowers.

There has been some big spending in the Strong household.  Namely by the Strong little girls.  We have been helping them save their money since they were babies.  Each time they would get birthday money or do extra chores, we would give them a little bit for spending.  The bulk of it would go into a savings for them.  At this point, they each had about $200.  Six months or so ago, Kendall kept asking for a Kindle Fire.  We assumed the phase would pass.  However, I did tell her that if she REALLY wanted one, I would help her find a very good deal.  Every few weeks she would bring the topic up.  I would remind her that it would take nearly all of her life savings if she wanted one (so dramatic).  About a month ago, she came to me and said, "Mom - I am ready for a Kindle Fire.  Will you help me find a good deal?"  We found a brand new one on Craigslist with a case and a charger for $100.  She was so excited.  The lady had gotten it for a gift, but really liked her Ipad instead.  It had only been turned on a handful of times and nothing had even been downloaded to it.

Of course a few weeks later, Sidney was asking for one too.  After a week or so of searching, we found her a similar deal.  They are pretty stoked.  They have only "mysteriously" walked away from the kitchen counter a few times.  They are limited on the amount of time they get to use them.  I guess one cannot blame them for trying.

On a similar note, they each had earned $8 from random chores given to them by us and other family members.  Yesterday I took them shopping (coupons in hand).  Sidney picked up this fabulous Barbie Pool.  The girls had their friend Jordyn over for the day.  They had a blast playing with it outside.  Word of warning to other parents...this toy should ONLY be used outside (with actual water in it).  There was water everywhere.

The Barbie puppy even had to take a turn down the slide.  How many dolls can you fit into one pool?  Do you love the burgundy pantsuit?  My grandma hand crocheted that for my sister and I when we were little girls.

Happy Birthday to Me.

I love a nice quiet Birthday and this year was just that.  It was perfect.  My friend and coworker Maria brightened my day early with a hand picked bouquet of flowers from her garden.  Sadly, I did not snap a picture of the colorful arrangement (complete with a pretty ribbon).  Then the girls made me a homemade cake.  I am not sure what the infatuation with princess crowns is, but they insist that I wear one each year for my party.

They gave me a ton of very special gifts.  Sidney had made at least 5 cards.  They each wrapped up their very favorite toys for me.  It was super sweet!  They were so excited to show me the gifts.

My niece, Hallie, was here for a visit.  She bought me a pair of Bob's for my birthday.  I had never heard of them, but they are the most comfortable shoes ever!

My beautiful grandma was also here for a visit.  She is such an amazing woman.  So strong and so gentle at the same time.  I am extremely spoiled and got a back rub from her every night while she was visiting.  She has the strongest hands ever.

I am always happy when I get to spend time with my mom.  I hope that my daughters will stay as close with me as I have with my mom.

Kevin helped to make it a very special time.  He and the girls surprised me with a new Willow Tree Angel for my collection.  I had spied it at the Cracker Barrel a few weeks ago.  He had tucked it away in his memory bank.  The angel was called My Girls.  It is a father with his two daughters "Looking at you, I see wonder, joy, strength."

Little Fish and Fun with Friends.

The girls finished up their last swim class of the year.  It was just in time for the neighborhood pool to open.  Kendall learned quite a bit this year.  It is nice to go to the pool and not worry about her at all.

She has learned to swim with flippers, tread water (though she is not totally relaxed at this), and she is doing the crawl much stronger now.

Sidney still has a ways to go.  Her own fears are the only thing holding her back.  She is super athletic, but definitely likes her comfort zone.  For this summer, she will play hard and we will keep a watchful eye on her.

The girls missed Emily's birthday party, so we had a post party celebration at the Strong house.  The girls swam in the hot tub, played hard and acted goofy - naturally.

Excellent Eats!

As I have mentioned previously, we have been participating in a fruit and vegetable co-op.  It has been an amazing adventure.  Here are just a few of our favorites that we would have otherwise not tried.

Roasted Swiss Chard with Feta  Spinach who?  Holy swiss chard - I love it!

Bok Choy Salad  We made this one for Easter and it was a huge hit.

Creamy Potato Leek Soup  Comfort food at its finest!

Green Risotto with Fava Beans Preparing the fava beans was a lot of work, but fun!

Orange-flesh Honeydew Melon  I could have sworn it was a honeydew melon in my basket.  To my surprise, I cut it open to find a cantaloupe.  I had to google it to be sure it was not a mistake.

Kindergarten Celebration.

It has been a long time since I last blogged.  I seem to have lost the bug.  Hopefully it has found its way back.  I had went private on the blog, but we decided to open it back up.  We have too many family members that were having trouble creating an account.  These are the same family members that found great joy in reading about our family antics.  So here we are re-entering the blogosphere.  Enjoy!  Hopefully having my audience back will bring me some much needed motivation.

Kendall graduated from Kindergarten at the end of May.  They had a really nice celebration.  Kevin and Sidney got there super early to save us the best seats in the house.  Sid goofing off to pass the time.  She is such a character.

Kendall heading for the stage to start the festivities.  She has reached a new stage in life.  She is now socially aware (aka turning red in the cheeks at times).  This year was spent learning new things, forging new friendships, putting up with mean girls, deciding to march to her own beat, falling in love (several times) and endlessly chasing the boys.  It was a good start to a long education.

Her class sang several songs before receiving their diplomas.

She is officially moving on to first grade.  What will Sidney and Grandma do without her all day?

Grandma made her a special graduation cake.  She wanted a three tier cake with a dolphin on top (just like our wedding cake).

She received some very special graduation gifts.  Then off to a busy summer.  Kevin just finished up a two week literacy class that would have normally been a semester long - whew!  We have had lots of family and friends in town for visits.  With Terrell here, Boise has become a destination spot.

Our Backyard Sanctuary.

When Kevin and I moved into our new house 18 months ago, we agreed that we would take our time working on the yard and house.  Not so much!  We have been working our tails off.  The yard was a blank slate, which was a welcome change after dealing with a yard that somebody else had started in our old house.  Namely the mounds of river rock EVERYWHERE.  Last year we put in the dog kennel, shed, patio and curbing.  Then we worked on adding permabark into the curbed areas.

As soon as the weather permitted, we were back out there for more!  We stained both our fence and Terrell's fence, put in an RV pad at Terrell's, planted her yard, planted our yard, put in the garden (I am sure I am forgetting something...Kevin will remind me).  Whew!  Are you tired yet?  Here are a few pictures of the finished product.

A view of the back fence from the swing set.

And a view of the back fence from the garden area.

Our first try at gardening.  I am hoping for at least one zucchini, everything else will be a bonus!

We have a ton of beautiful perennials in the front yard, but with all of the rock beds I was missing the annuals.  We found a nice little spot outside of the bedroom bay window.  Kendall spent an entire afternoon digging this out and helping me plant.  She is quite a hard worker.  Sidney planted one flower then it was off to more important things like playing.

We moved the wishing well that Uncle Jason made onto the patio and planted some flowers in it.  Historically, every time I have done this Cooper has them pulled out and chewed to shreds within 24 hours.  It has been over a week and she has not touched these or the annuals.  Growing Up?  Hmmm....It has only been 9 years.

The outdoor fireplace and cozy Adirondack chairs.  My husband is quite the outdoor decorator and loved the color these chairs added.  We have some really nice pillows for them (not pictured).

And the final touch...outdoor lanterns for the patio.  It is time to sit back and enjoy now!

The Creativity Abounds.

The girls have been on a roll lately.  Last week they came home talking about bird nests.  I took them on a walk that was not originally intended to be a nature walk.  It started out with both girls in the bike trailer (aka stroller).  Kendall did not bring any shoes, but about a quarter mile into our two mile trek Sidney asked to get out and walk.  Once she was out, she behaved like a very large squirrel.  She gathered pine cones, sticks, rocks, flowers and any other items she could find.  She would run back to the trailer with her treasures and pass them off to Kendall.  Then she would take off hunting for more treasures.  She ran for at least a mile.  When we got back home, they hauled their findings up to the craft room.  An hour or so later they came out with their "nests".

A few days ago, Sidney headed upstairs to work on a "special art project".  She literally spent hours on this creation.  It gives new meaning to the phrase "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder".   She had worked so hard and was so proud.  She told us it was a curtain that we could hang up.  Now we just have to decide where to put it....

The grand finale is their new art center, as they have dubbed it.  Kevin and I bought a deck box last week.  The girls asked us yesterday if they could have the cardboard that it came in.  They dragged the cardboard upstairs and reappeared hours later.  Here is a picture of the fort from the outside entrance.

They even managed to cut some very nice windows.  Yes, we are those crazy parents that let out kids play with scissors (gasp!).  That might explain the haircuts last year.

A view from the top.  If you look really close, you will see that they even took enough care to fasten it to the walls with masking tape.  Thank goodness for touch up paint!

They are now working on decorating the walls (among other things).

During the past few minutes while I have been working on this post, Sidney has been working feverishly behind me.  Now for the big unveil...TaaDaa!
